REAL TECHNIQUES // Limited Edition Modern Natural Makeup Kit - Review + SwatchesMonday, May 19, 2014
At the end of April, Real Techniques posted a photo on their Instagram with the very exciting announcement that they had just released two limited edition makeup kits, and it's safe to say I got a tad excited. It is no secret that I absolutely love the Real Techniques brushes (I think I have about 3/4 of the range available), when I saw that photo I was straight onto the site and I ordered both of them right then and there. If you aren't familiar with Real Techniques, it was started by makeup artists Sam and Nic Chapman, who are the faces behind Pixiwoo on Youtube - and they sure know their makeup, so these makeup kits had a lot of pressure to impress.
There are two palettes available, this Modern Natural one and the other called Night Owl (which will be up tomorrow). They are limited edition, until the sell out - so if you want 'em, you better get in quick!
As a little bonus, you also get their Pointed Liner Brush. This is very small, which is great for fine details such as lining with gel eyeliner, or also precision concealing on blemishes. It is quite a stiff brush, and like all the other RT brushes, such great quality and they wash up near new every time.
The makeup kit comes with four shadows, a gel eyeliner, a blush, a highlighter and two mini lip glosses. The packaging is quite large, very thick, made of a hard cardboard with a magnetic closure lid; I definitely wouldn't say that it is the most sturdiest of packaging, but it is definitely not the worst. There are names to each of the shadows and glosses but they aren't included anywhere on the box or packaging (which I find a little odd), but can be found on the website.
GEL EYELINER IN DARK CHOCOLATE
I have not ever tried a gel eyeliner before, I usually stick to the liquid pen types, or simply go for a pencil. This seems very easy to work with, it's smooth and doesn't drag. The colour pigmentation is very good and it can be built upon. Using the bonus brush is the way to go and perfect for the job. Including the brown eyeliner definitely fits within the overall colour scheme of the palette, and I am hoping it doesn't dry up (gel eyeliners are notoriously known for drying out very quickly!)
The four shadows included are perfectly suited to one another and have a variety of finishes. The quality is great, they feel very soft and have great pigmentation as well as blendability - I wouldn't expect anything less from the Chapman sisters! Quicksand is a cream shade, with a slight golden hint to it. Gold Metal is beautifully pigmented and is a bronzed gold and extremely shimmery. Caramel Mocha is a matte chocolate brown, great in the crease or as a base shadow. Finally, Nightshade is a taupe shade, that verges on purple, with a lot of glitter throughout.
It is nice to see that the lip glosses come in their own tube instead of in a pan (I really dislike palettes that have them in pans, it just ends up getting so messy!) They are an adorable mini size with a standard doe foot applicator. I really don't like sticky glosses and they only have a very slight hint of tackiness to them, otherwise they actually feel surprisingly nice. They also have quite a strong smell, that is like a very sweet vanilla. Nectar is the baby pink shade, that gives only a touch of colour on the lips, and Copperhead is a caramel/gold type shade that is also very sheer and very glittery.
BLUSH IN CORAL SUNSET
I love the shade of this blush, it is very soft but works great with the brown tones of the kit. It has good pigmentation but is not so intense that you over-do it on first swipe. It only has a small amount of glittery bits in it, just enough to give a bit of a glow to the colour.
CREAM HIGHLIGHTER IN CHAMPAGNE
This highlighter is like The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer in cream form, it is totally gorgeous! It is extremely creamy and very easy to dab on with your fingers and blend out, and catches the light beautifully.
Here you can see the Night Owl makeup kit on the left (coming tomorrow!) and the Modern Natural on the right. I think that RT have done a really great job at the colour selection and the inclusion of five different make up items is great and covers most of your bases in terms of daily makeup.
Real Techniques now are shipping worldwide straight from their website (hooray!) and for really low prices. The Modern Natural makeup kit is USD $25.00 (they have a built in currency converter when you buy). I got both palettes and only had to pay USD $5.75 for shipping - super impressive! It took about 15 days to arrive from the US to NZ; a little longer than usual but I can't complain. I would definitely recommend these palettes, especially if you are a fan of Sam and Nic and Real Techniques - best buy them before they sell out and are gone for good!
Are you a Real Techniques lover as well? Did you get one (or both) of these palettes?
